Christmas Celebrations in Madaba 2026

Madaba is home to one of the largest Christian communities in Jordan, and Christmas here is marked with church services, street illuminations, and public gatherings that draw visitors from across the country as well as international travellers who choose to spend the holiday in the Holy Land region. The celebrations centre on the Church of St George, which houses the famous sixth-century mosaic map of the Holy Land — one of the oldest surviving cartographic representations of Jerusalem and the surrounding area.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

The main liturgical focus falls on Christmas Eve (24 December) and Christmas Day (25 December), with midnight Mass at St George’s and other churches in the city drawing large congregations. The Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic communities both hold their own services, with the Orthodox calendar additionally marking Christmas on 7 January. Visitors are generally welcome to attend services, though it is respectful to arrive early and dress conservatively — covered shoulders and legs are appropriate.

The streets around the Church of St George are decorated with lights and a Christmas tree in the central square. Food stalls and small markets sometimes appear on 24—25 December, selling seasonal sweets and locally made crafts. The atmosphere is celebratory but not commercialised in the way of European Christmas markets — it remains primarily a community event.

Visiting Madaba at Christmas

Madaba is approximately 30 kilometres southwest of Amman, roughly 30 to 40 minutes by road. It is easy to visit as a day trip from the capital or to use as an overnight base for visiting Mount Nebo, which sits 9 kilometres to the northwest and is an important pilgrimage site associated with Moses. The Dead Sea is a further 20 minutes west by road, making a combined circuit feasible over two to three days.

December is one of the cooler and sometimes rainy months in Madaba, with average daytime temperatures around 10—13 degrees Celsius. Pack layers and a waterproof jacket for outdoor evening events.

Practical notes

Most shops and restaurants in Madaba’s commercial centre remain open over Christmas, as much of the city’s economy caters to year-round tourism. The Church of St George (visitpetra.jo does not cover Madaba specifically — check Jordan Tourism Board listings for current opening hours) charges a small entrance fee of approximately JOD 3 to view the mosaic floor when regular services are not running.
